PEORIA, Ill. - The Kernels downed the Peoria Chiefs 6-1 on Saturday night at Dozer Park. Hudson Boyd (4-4) went five innings for the win on the mound while Max Kepler homered and doubled. Joel Licon extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

The Kernels took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Kepler started the inning with a double to deep right-center, and Adam Brett Walker followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Mike Gonzales singled into right field, bringing home Kepler for the game's first run. Walker scored from third base on a wild pitch from Chiefs starter Mike Mayers, making the score 2-0. Joel Licon's RBI single plated Gonzales to put the Kernels up by three runs. Licon's single extended his hitting streak to 15 games - the longest for a Kernels player this season.

Peoria's Juan Herrera singled home Jordan Walton in the bottom of the fourth inning, making the score 3-1.

The Kernels plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 5-1. Jonathan Murphy singled to begin the inning and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Niko Goodrum. Murphy would motor home from second base on a passed ball by Chiefs catcher Jonathan Keener. Kepler homered in the inning to put the Kernels up 5-1. Kepler's shot went to right field and was his eighth of the season.

Cedar Rapids added a run in the eighth inning, pushing the lead to 6-1. Walker led off the inning with a double and would later score on Travis Harrison's RBI single.

Hudson Boyd (4-4) went five innings for the win, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three and walked four. Christian Powell and Mason Melotakis both added two scoreless innings.

Mike Mayers (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits over four innings, taking the loss for the Chiefs.
