Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Emilio Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a multi-hit night but a pair of home runs in the fifth inning gave the Lake County Captains (28-26, 51-70) a 5-3 series-opening win over the Lansing Lugnuts (22-33, 54-70) on Saturday night in front of 9,238 fans at Cooley Law School Stadium.
With the game knotted up, 2-2, in the top of the fifth inning, Lake County designated hitter Jeremy Lucas blasted a solo homer to deep left-center against Lansing starter Kendall Graveman (Loss, 0-2) putting the Captains up, 3-2.
After a Joe Sever single chased Graveman from the game, Kramer Champlin came on and promptly gave up a two-run homer to Eric Haase, putting Lake County ahead, 5-2.
Graveman lasted 4.1 innings, allowing four runs - all earned - on seven Lake County hits. The 22-year old struck out five and walked three.
A night after going 6-for-6 and tying franchise and Midwest League records, Guerrero then led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double, extending his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games. Christian Lopes delivered an RBI groundout to get a run back, but DJ Brown came on in the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings to seal the win for the Captains, earning his first save of the year.
Down a pair in the bottom of the ninth, Guerrero came to the plate with a runner at second base but struck out to end the game. He finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Dwight Smith, Jr. drew a walk in the losing effort, extending his on-base streak to a team-high 18 games.
Each team scraped across a pair of runs in the first inning. Lake County jumped ahead behind RBI's from Sever and Haase while the Lugnuts brought home a pair on an error by Captains' center fielder LeVon Washington.
The win went to Lake County starter Robbie Aviles (Win, 4-3), who settled down after the rough first inning. He lasted five total innings, giving up three runs - only one earned - on just three hits. Aviles walked three and struck out one.
The four-game set continues on Sunday afternoon with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch on a Kids Day at Cooley Law School Stadium. Families are welcomed to play catch on the field prior to the game and kids can run the bases postgame. Lansing will give the ball to right-hander Taylor Cole (7-11, 3.92) against Lake County righty Jake Sisco (4-10, 4.72).
