Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - Orlando Arcia strung together three hits, including a homer, and scored two runs as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pounded out a 6-4 victory over the Beloit Snappers on Saturday night in Midwest League action with 2,308 on hand at Pohlman Field.
Beloit's fifth straight loss drops them to 67-57 (24-30 in the second half). Wisconsin takes game one of this four game set to up their record to 53-66 (24-30 in the second half).
The Snappers got on the board first with a first inning run as Brett Vertigan, who'd begun the frame with a walk, scored on a double play. The Timber Rattlers used an error to tie score in the second and Arcia (3-5, HR, RBI, 2 runs) put them in front in the third when he took the inning's first pitch from Andres Avila (5-4) over the right field fence for his fourth home run this season.
Beloit fought back to tie the game in the fourth on two singles, a passed ball and a fielder's choice, but the score was immediately untied in the top of the fifth. With two on and one out, Wisconsin's Tyrone Taylor struck the first blow with an RBI single. Another error then brought in the inning's second run and Parker Berberet's sacrifice fly made the score 5-2. Max Walla pushed across the final run of the fifth with a run-scoring double.
After five solid innings from starting pitcher Jorge Lopez (7-8), the Timber Rattlers turned the game over to their bullpen. Hobbs Johnson tossed a scoreless sixth but ran into trouble in the seventh, handing out three free passes to load the bases with one out. Unfortunately for the Snappers, nothing came of this opportunity as Johnson induced an inning ending double play.
The Snappers mounted another uprising in the eighth, creeping to within 6-3 on John Wooten's (3-3, HR, RBI, run) 18th homer of the year and cutting the lead to 6-4 when Dayton Alexander knocked in Matt Olson with a double down the left field line. That was as close as they would come, as reliever Jono Armold ended the game with a shutout ninth.
Sunday is the date for the second game of this series as Beloit's RHP Deyvi Jimenez (2-4, 8.35 ERA) will duel with Wisconsin's RHP Austin Ross (9-4, 3.78 ERA). Start time for the game is 2:00pm. Fans who come out to the park can take home with them a very special souvenir as the A's Themed Jersey Auction will take place during the game. The Snappers will be wearing jerseys inspired by the Oakland Athletics and the bidding on those jerseys will start at $55.00. Also, the Stateline News offers fans a great discount.
