Burlington Bees News Release

Sherman Johnson fell a home run shy of the cycle, picking up a single, double and triple in his first three at-bats, and the Burlington Bees used a four-run fifth to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 6-4 on Saturday at Moodern Woodmen Park.

The Bees (49-70, 23-31) began its most important road trip of the season with a huge victory, scoring six runs on 12 hits against a Bandits (68-54, 30-23) team that currently holds one of the two playoff spots in the division.

Burlington used one big inning to propel the team to victory, scoring four runs on five hits in the fifth. Wendell Soto led off the inning with a single off Joe Bircher. Johnson followed with a single of his own to put two men on for Angel Rosa. Rosa broke a 1-1 tie, bringing home both Soto and Johnson with a double. Exicardo Cayones reached on a bunt single and with two outs, Zach Wright ripped a base hit to score Rosa and Cayones.

Johnson wasted no time getting the party started on Saturday, lining a triple off of Joe Bircher. Angel Rosa lifted a fly ball to center off Bircher (3-3) that was deep enough to score Johnson for the first run of the game. The Bees got two more men on in the inning, but Julio Concepcion grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. The double play was an issue for Burlington in the first three innings, as the Bees hit into three double plays in the first three frames.

Quad Cities tied the game at one in the second on a ground-rule double from Rio Ruiz and a run-scoring double by Roberto Pena. Brandon Love kept the Bandits quiet for his final three innings on the mound. Love (4-6) fired five innings of one-run ball, striking out five to earn his fourth win of the season.

Eswarlin Jimenez made his Bees debut and surrendered three unearned runs in the seventh. Angel Rosa's throwing error allowed Pena to reach to start the inning. Brian Blasik singled and after a groundout put Pena and Blasik into scoring position, Teoscar Hernandez grounded out to third to score Pena. Carlos Correa followed with a single to score Blasik and then Correa scored all the way from first on a two-out single by Danry Vasquez. Correa finished the day 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single and a walk.

Jake Boyd picked up his first save in 2013, twirling two scoreless innings. Boyd (S, 1) got some help from Johnson in the ninth, with the third basemen making two spectacular plays on line drives. Johnson's attempt to hit for the cycle came extremely close, but he flew out to the warning track in his final two at-bats.

Burlington is now four games back of Peoria and Clinton and will try and build a three-game winning streak on Sunday afternoon when Chris O'Grady makes the start against Brian Holmes at 5:00 p.m.
