Clinton LumberKings News Release

Geneva, IL "" Clinton's five-game winning streak came to a screeching halt as the bullpen allowed four runs in the final two innings in a 7-6 loss to Kane County Saturday night.

Trailing 3-0 early, the LumberKings mounted the first comeback at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, scoring six runs in the middle innings to take a 6-3 lead.

D.J. Peterson's two-run single in the fifth inning tied the game at 3-3 and Jordy Lara delivered a two-run triple in the seventh to break the tie. Gaby Guerrero pitched in with a run-scoring hit to make it 6-3.

Lara's three-bagger came after he replaced Peterson in the top of the fifth inning. Peterson left the game with food poisoning.

Blake Holovach came on at the same time Peterson left; with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the fifth. He was able to get out of the jam when Gaby Guerrero threw out Jeimer Candelario trying to score from second on a base hit by Guiseppe Papaccio. Kane County Manager argued the call with home plate umpire Clinton Vondrak and was ejected.

Holovach was cruising until he hit a wall in the seventh. Oliver Zapata started the inning when a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Rock Shoulders. A base hit by Marco Hernandez put runners at the corners for Papaccio who came through again, this time his base hit to right that scored Shoulders to make it 6-5.

Mark Bordonaro was summoned from the bullpen and promptly allowed a bloop single to center by Reggie Golden. The hit scored Hernandez to even the game at 6-6.

After the LumberKings were turned away in the top of the eighth, Kane County capitalized in the bottom half. Gioskar Amaya doubled to start the frame and went to third on a sac bunt. Bordonaro then got Candelario to pop out for the second out. Clinton then tried to intentionally walk Shoulders. The plan went astray when Bordonaro missed badly on ball four. The pitch went to the backstop and allowed Amaya to score the go-ahead run.

In the ninth, Clinton fought back when Taylor Ard doubled to start the inning. The rally was not to be as Guerrero and Janelfry Zorrilla both lined out to right and reliever Michael Hamann snared a comebacker by Martin Peguero to preserve the 7-6 win.

Despite the loss, Clinton did not lose any ground in the playoff race as Cedar Rapids defeated Peoria, 6-1. Game two of the four-game set is Sunday. The LumberKings turn to right-hander Victor Sanchez (5-5, 2.96) while the Cougars send right-hander Tayler Scott (5-7, 4.31). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM CT.
