
Erik Johnson Named IL Pitcher of the Week

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Charlotte Knights RHP Erik Johnson, who struck-out 20 batters without allowing a run in two starts last week (14.0 innings pitched), was named as the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 15-21, as announced by the International League of Professional Baseball Clubs, Inc. this morning. Johnson improved to 6-5 with a 3.00 ERA on the season after tossing eight shutout innings on Sunday. He currently leads the IL in strikeouts with 88.
Johnson, 25, began the week on Tuesday, June 16 by throwing six scoreless innings against the Pawtucket Red Sox from BB&T Ballpark. On that day, Johnson earned his fifth win of the 2015 campaign and struck-out a career game-high 11 batters. The Mountain View, CA native followed up that impressive performance on Sunday, June 21 with eight scoreless innings and nine strikeouts for his sixth win of the season. He finished the week 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (14.0 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 20 SO).
In four starts during the month of June, Johnson is 2-1 with a 0.96 ERA (28.0 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 33 SO). He has not allowed an earned run since June 5 - a streak of 25.0 consecutive innings. Overall on the season, the University of California-Berkeley product is 6-5 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) over 78.0 innings pitched. His 3.00 ERA ranks ninth in the IL this season and he is averaging 10.20 strikeouts per nine innings - tops in the IL among starters in 2015.
The Charlotte Knights are in the midst of a seven-game win-streak and open a four-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs tonight at 7:05 p.m. from NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY. The Knights went a perfect 6-0 on their recent six-game homestand and begin today in first place in the IL South Division - two games ahead of second place Durham. On Saturday, June 20, Charlotte manager Joel Skinner notched his 250th career Knights victory. Skinner is the all-time winningest manager in Knights franchise history.
The Knights return home to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, July 2 for a three-game, two-day series against the Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves).
