Rochester Red Wings News Release
PAWTUCKET, RI - After going six straight starts without a win, Tyler Duffey has now won two games in a row after a strong performance Monday night and the Rochester Red Wings beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 3-2 at McCoy Stadium.
Duffey (2-4) lost his first four starts after he was promoted from Double-A Chattanooga but has not allowed an earned run in his last two starts spanning 15.1 innings. Monday he surrendered five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
The offense did just enough in the win as the Red Wings (36-33) scraped across three runs. In the fourth, James Beresford started the inning with a single and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Eric Fryer. With runners on first and third, Danny Ortiz lifted a sacrifice fly to center giving Rochester a 1-0 lead against Pawtucket spot-starter Zeke Spruill.
Duffey retired the first nine batters of the game before a leadoff walk of Jackie Bradley Jr. in the fourth. After a foul out, back-to-back double play balls were misplayed for errors without recording an out, the second of which led to a run, and the PawSox (34-37) tied the game at one. Garin Cecchini singled in the second run of the inning with two outs to give Pawtucket a 2-1 lead.
As they did in the fourth, the Wings started the sixth inning with two base runners. Fryer walked and Ortiz followed with a single to start the frame. Oswaldo Arcia then hit into a fielder's choice that forced Ortiz at second but Fryer moved to third on the play. Reynaldo Rodriguez then tied the game with another fielder's choice force out to tie the game at two.
Rochester took the lead in the seventh as Eric Farris started the inning with a double against Edwin Escobar (0-1). Doug Bernier then dropped down a two-strike bunt to sacrifice Farris to third and Danny Santana followed with a go-ahead double to score Farris. Santana has hit in six straight games with an extra-base hit in each contest.
The PawSox threatened in the eighth after Duffey retired Bradley, Jr. for a quick first out. Quintin Berry hit a comebacker off of Duffey that forced manager Mike Quade and Athletic Trainer Larry Bennese out to the mound. He stayed in and allowed a single to Humberto Quintero before he was relieved by Ryan O'Rourke who came on to face lefty Carlos Peguero with runners at the corners. O'Rourke got a swinging strikeout on just three pitches before Mark Hamburger entered and got a looking strikeout on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat.
A.J. Achter needed 13 pitches to toss a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to earn his 11th save in as many chances since taking over as Red Wings closer in early May. He, Danny Ortiz and Pat Dean are among vote leaders for the Triple-A All-Star Game in Omaha. Fans can vote up to 25 times by clicking here.
