International League Names Players of the Week
Published on June 22, 2015 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Syracuse first baseman Kevin Keyes and Charlotte pitcher Erik Johnson have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from June 15-Â21.  Johnson combines with two-Âtime Batter of the Week Carlos Sanchez to give the Knights three weekly awards this season, tied with Rochester for most in the IL.  Keyes is the first member of the Chiefs to be so honored this season, coming almost exactly one year after the last Syracuse player to win a weekly award (Brandon Laird, June 16-Â22, 2014).Â
KEVIN KEYES, Syracuse Chiefs                                                                        IL BATTER OF THE WEEKÂ
Kevin Keyes has now played one week at the Triple-ÂA level, and so far International League pitchers haven't figured out how to keep him off the basepaths.  Keyes hit safely in each of his first six games with Syracuse, posting a .462 average with a League-Âbest 12 hits and four doubles while sparking the Chiefs to their first four-Âgame winning streak of the season.  In his first two Triple-ÂA at-Âbats last Monday, Keyes doubled to lead Syracuse to an 8-Â3 win over Toledo.  He collected three hits in back- to-Âback games Friday and Saturday against Buffalo; then on Sunday in the bottom of the 10th of a scoreless affair, Keyes led off the frame with a single and scored the walk-Âoff winning run two batters later to cap his first week in Triple-ÂA in style.    26-Âyear-Âold Kevin Keyes is in his sixth season since being selected in the 7th round of the 2010 draft by the Nationals.  Keyes began the 2015 campaign with Double-ÂA Harrisburg, where he was hitting .235 with five home runs and 26 RBI at the time of his promotion.  Keyes is a native of Austn, Texas.Â
ERIK JOHNSON, Charlotte Knights                                                               IL PITCHER OF THE WEEKÂ
Right-Âhander Erik Johnson delivered two masterful performances this week as his Charlotte Knights won seven straight games and surged to the top of the IL South Division race.  Johnson won twice thanks to a League-Âbest 14.0 innings pitched and 20 strikeouts for the week, giving him a streak of three straight starts without allowing an earned run.  Tuesday night facing defending League- champion Pawtucket, the same team he had just defeated on June 10, Johnson tossed 6.0 shutout frames and struck out a career-Âhigh 11 batters in a 2-Â0 Knights victory.  Then on Sunday against Indianapolis, owners of the League's best record in 2015, Johnson struck out nine over 8.0 shutout innings as Charlotte rolled to a 13-Â1 win and completed a perfect homestand.  For the season, Johnson leads the IL with 88 strikeouts and is 9th in ERA (3.00).  25-Âyear-Âold Erik Johnson is in his fifth season since being selected by the White Sox in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft.  He is a veteran of ten starts in the big leagues with Chicago in 2013 and 2014, combining to post a record of 4-Â3 with a 4.73 ERA.  Johnson is a native of Mountain View, California.Â
