Iowa Wolves News Release
HIDALGO, TX, February 2, 2011- Guard Curtis Stinson's triple-double and Chicago Bulls assignee James Johnson's 31 point, 14 rebound night led the Iowa Energy to a 136-127 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers Wednesday night.
The Energy's 21st win of the season was also the 130th consecutive game that the franchise has been in 1st place in their division.
Iowa opened up the game on a 12-0 run fueled by three steals by the Energy defense. Minutes later, Johnson's 3-point play put Iowa up 23-8. Rio Grande Valley responded in the 2nd quarter with a 16-3 run to put the Vipers up 45-41. The hosts made three 3-pointers during the run; and made 17 of 46 attempts from behind the arc during that game.
In a game that featured numerous large runs, Iowa used an 18-3 surge late in the 1st half to help put the Eastern Conference leaders ahead 72-66 at the break.
The Vipers regained the lead 79-78 on a Richard Roby dunk with 8:19 left in the 3rd, but it was all Energy for the rest of the quarter. Wing Othyus Jeffers scored the final five points of period to help push Iowa ahead 110-98 heading into the 4th.
Iowa would maintain their lead throughout the final quarter, never allowing the Vipers to get within 6 points. The win pushes the Energy to 21-9 on the year, 2 games ahead of Erie in the Eastern Conference.
Four Energy players finished with double-doubles in the game. In addition to Stinson (14 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds) and Johnson, Courtney Sims (23 points, 12 rebounds) and Marqus Blakely (15 points and 11 rebounds) both had big nights in the win.
