
T-Birds Offense Heats up in Win

Rio Rancho, NM - Despite the cold, snowy weather, the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-15) offense had no problem heating up, as they beat the Texas Legends (14-14), 130-123.
The Thunderbirds 130 points were a season high and they shot 56.8% from the field in the game.
In the first quarter, the Thunderbirds got off to the quick start jumping out to a 12-2 lead. Led by Jamine Peterson who had seven points off the bench in the first quarter, the Thunderbirds held a 37-25 lead after one quarter.
With the Thunderbirds holding an 11 point lead in the second quarter, they went on a 13-4 run to take a 20 point lead with 7:21 remaining in the half. The Legends answered with a 23-3 run to take their first lead of the game and they would hold a 64-63 lead at halftime. Joe Alexander and Booker Woodfox each had 14 points to lead Texas.
The Thunderbirds opened the second half by scoring six of the first seven points of the half to take a 70-66 lead. Joe Alexander then helped the Legends to an 8-0 run by scoring six quick points and they took the lead back, 74-70. With 19.6 seconds left in the third quarter, Dar Tucker hit a 3-pointer to give the Thunderbirds a 96-95 lead and they would hold that advantage heading into the fourth.
After some back and forth action to start the fourth quarter, the Legends and T-Birds were tied at 109 with 5:39 left. The Thunderbirds then went on a 7-1 run to take a six point lead with three minutes to go. Texas then scored five quick points to cut the lead to one point. On the Thunderbirds ensuing possession, Abdulai Jalloh hit two free throws that started a 6-0 run that gave the T-Birds control for good.
The Thunderbirds and Legends will play their third consecutive game tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Tomorrow is also Hoops that Heal night where a portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen fund.
