The Emeralds loaded the bases with no outs before Matt Rose lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Happ from third. Eloy Jimenez was thrown out on the play after he slid over the bag at third. Hillsboro quickly grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs, but Eugene would answer back in a major way in the bottom of the frame.

Blake Headley started the run of seven straight hits with a double to left. Ho-young Son followed with a single and Donnie Dewees singled as well to score Headley. Frandy De La Rosa singled to score Son and Happ ripped his third hit of the game, a single, to plate Dewees, giving Eugene a 4-3 lead. Jimenez continued the streak with the sixth straight hit of the inning on a sharp single up the middle to load the bases. Justin Marra tallied the seventh straight hit with a single to score a pair and Eugene took a 6-3 lead. When the fifth inning was done, the Ems had racked up seven runs on eight hits and a sac fly.

Hillsboro got one run back in the top of the eighth but it wasn't enough.
