Indians Late Rally Falls Short in Ninth Inning

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Indians collected 12 hits, five more than the Dust Devils, but went just 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position to allow Tri-City to top Spokane 8-4 on Wednesday Night in front of 4,269 fans at Avista Stadium. It was Girls Night Out presented by Traveler Beer and HOT 96.9.

After struggling in the first frame, Joe Palumbo got into his groove allowing just a single hit in innings two through four. Palumbo gave up three earned runs in the first, nearly matching his season total of four, pushing his season's ERA up to 2.45.

Spokane would take one back in the bottom half of the first inning after LeDarious Clark snapped his 0-for-18 skid. Clark lined one deep to center field for a leadoff triple. Jamie Potts, who finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, singled him home. Clark, despite the slump, still leads the league with a .370 average after going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Jeffrey Springs relieved Palumbo in the fifth inning, striking out one in 1.2 scoreless innings. Jason Richman added three more scoreless innings, walking three and striking out two. Tyler Davis finished the ninth, allowing one run on two hits.

The Indians made it interesting in the ninth inning, with five consecutive runners reaching base. Spokane plated three of them before Diego Cedeno struck out to end the game.

Todd McDonald, an free agent signed by the Texas Rangers out of Australia, made his season debut as he struck out pinch-hitting for Connor McKay.

Austin Allen, who has hit .320 in his past ten games, collected a two-out, bases-clearing triple to extend the Dust Devil lead to 7-1. Leadoff hitter Rod Boykin was on base five times, plating four runs for Tri-City.

The Spokane Indians return home tomorrow night, Thursday, July 16th, for Future Texas Rangers Night! All Indians players will be wearing Texas Rangers jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game to benefit the Special Olympics of Eastern Washington. The game is presented by Ed's Premier Auto Body, KHQ-TV,103 .9 BOB FM and 790 The Eagle.
