Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Volcanoes gained another 2015 Draft pick on Thursday, adding left-handed pitcher Andrew Suarez to the roster. Suarez was drafted in the second round (No. 61overall) in last month's 2015 Draft. He's the second-highest drafted player on Salem-Keizer's roster behind first-round selection Chris Shaw (No. 31 overall).
Suarez was a three-year starter at the University of Miami and dominated throughout his collegiate career, earing third-team All-ACC honors his sophomore and junior seasons. He struggled with injuries when he first arrived at Miami but broke through during his sophomore season, posting a 6-3 record with a 2.96 ERA. The Washington Nationals selected Suarez in the second round (No. 57 overall) of the 2014 Draft but the two sides couldn't agree to terms and the southpaw returned to school for one more season. He made the most of his final campaign, recording a 9-2 record with a 3.48 ERA. He made two appearances in the College World Series, including starting Miami's opener, and totaled four strikeouts.
Suarez joins E.J. Encinosa as the second former Hurricane on Salem-Keizer. The Volcanoes also now have four players who played collegiately in the state of Florida. Suarez and Encinosa (Miami), outfielder Mark Nelson (Florida Atlantic) and pitcher Eric Sim (South Florida) all played in the Sunshine State.
