Ronnie Jebavy hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning Wednesday night to lead Salem-Keizer to a 5-4 win and a sixth consecutive victory in front of 2,166 fans at Volcanoes Stadium.
It was Jebavy's third homer of the season and Salem-Keizer's first walk-off victory of the year. The 2015 fifth-round draft pick turned on the first pitch he saw from reliever Cristian Quintin (1-2, 3.46) and deposited it just over the left field fence. He rounded the bases and met his teammates at home plate for the first time in his professional career. Cory Taylor (1-0, 2.31) tossed a scoreless top of the ninth and earned the win.
The Volcanoes carried a 4-2 lead into the eighth but Carlos Herrera tied things up with one swing of the bat, rocketing a two-run home run off of reliever E.J. Encinosa. The homer spoiled another excellent outing from Volcanoes starter Logan Webb, who allowed two unearned runs on three hits in five innings of work. The right-hander has allowed only three earned runs in his last 21 innings.
The Hawks took advantage of a crucial error in the second to take an early lead. Brian Mundell led off the frame with a double and Max White walked, placing runners at first and second with nobody out. Hamlet Marte then laid down a sacrifice bunt but Chris Shaw airmailed his throw to first, allowing both runners to score and Marte to scamper all the way to third. Webb limited the damage, however, retiring the next three batters he faced without surrendering another run.
Salem-Keizer came roaring back the next inning, knotting the game up at two runs apiece. Jose Vizcaino Jr. and C.J. Hinojosa both reached to begin the frame and came in to score when Julio Pena ripped a double into left two batters later.
The hottest offense in the league kept it rolling the following inning, tacking on another run to take the lead. Miguel Gomez and Shaw both singled with one out in the inning before Vizcaino Jr. doubled down the right field line, scoring Gomez and putting Salem-Keizer out in front.
Shaw extended the lead in the fifth, blasting a solo home run to right. It was the third long ball for Shaw, the 31st overall selection in the 2015 Draft.
Boise tied the game in the eighth but Jebavy sent the home crowd happy in the ninth, hitting the first walk-off homer at Volcanoes Stadium since June 25 of last season.
Player of the Game: Ronnie Jebavy's only hit on the night was the biggest of the game. His third homer of the season brought Salem-Keizer a sixth consecutive victory.
Up Next: The Volcanoes continue their series with the Boise Hawks Thursday night. Nolan Riggs (2-0, 0.42 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
