Lexington Legends News Release

The Savannah Sand Gnats scored four runs in the eighth inning, two on bases-loaded walks, and then held off a Lexington rally in the ninth to beat the Legends 6-5.

The Legends built an early 4-0 lead. Chris Wallace hit his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot in the top of the first inning, to put Lexington in front. In the third inning, Roberto Pena led off with a double, moved to third on an infield out and scored on Jiovanni Mier's single. Mier advanced to second when the ball got by left fielder Alonzo Harris, and to third on a throwing error by center fielder Rafael Fernandez. Wallace's infield out scored Mier, and the Legends led 3-0. They added a run in the fourth on a single by Adam Bailey and a double by Mike Kvasnicka.

Savannah got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Fernandez led off with a double. Robbie Shields reached first on an error by Mier, as Fernandez held at second. Both runners moved up on a ground out by Sam Honick, and Fernandez scored on an infield hit by Aderlin Rodriguez. The Sand Gnats cut the lead to two with a run in the sixth. With one out, Wilfredo Tovar and Harris singled, putting runners at first and third. Tovar scored on a balk by Legends reliever Jorge De Leon.

The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the eighth. Singles by Albert Cordero and Javier Rodriguez put runners at first and second with nobody out. After Alex Sogard relieved DeLeon, Tovar sacrificed the runners to second and third. Harris reached on an infield hit to load the bases, and Sogard walked the next two hitters to force in two runs and tie the game at 4-4. Sogard struck out Honeck, but after David Martinez relieved Sogard, Cory Vaughn, son of former big league slugger Greg Vaughn, doubled to right field, scoring two runs and putting the Sand Gnats in front, 6-4.

The Legends got one back in the ninth on a leadoff triple by Kvasnicka and a base hit by Daniel Adamson. Adamson advanced to second on a wild pitch, and held at second as pinch hitter Jhonny Medrano grounded out. Pena grounded a single to left field, but Adamson had to hold at third. Ben Orloff's infield hit loaded the bases, but Savannah reliever Josh Edgin got Mier on a called third strike for the second out. Wallace struck out swinging to end the game. Savannah reliever Angel Cuan (1-0), who entered the game in the sixth inning, got the win. Edgin picked up his fourth save, and second in two nights. Sogard (0-1) took the loss. Savannah has taken two of three in the five-game series, which resumes at 7:05 Friday night.
