Shorebirds Hang On, Win 8-7 Over Jackets

April 21, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - For the third night in a row, the Augusta GreenJackets were staring at a chance to pull off a win in their last at-bat, but unlike the last two nights, the GreenJackets fell just short of a walkoff win. Carlos Willoughby struck out looking with the tying run in scoring position as the Delmarva Shorebirds came away with an 8-7 win on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

After Delmarva scored a two-out run in the first, the GreenJackets took their own lead in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Adam Duvall and Devin Harris to claim a 2-1 advantage. It would be the last Augusta lead of the night, however, as the Shorebirds rallied in the third.

Delmarva scored twice in the third on a Kieron Pope RBI single and a fielder's choice groundout to take a one-run lead. The Shorebirds added a run in the fourth and batted around while tacking on four more in the fifth. RBI doubles from Trent Mummey and Michael Ohlman were the key Delmarva blows in the inning.

Trailing 8-2, the GreenJackets began to claw their way back in the fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Devin Harris drilled a single into right-center to score a pair and cut the Shorebirds' lead to four. Dan Burkhart flew out to end the inning, stranding two runners aboard in what would be an unsightly trend for both teams. Augusta stranded 12 runners while the Shorebirds left a whopping 15 men on base.

After missing chances in the sixth and seventh, the GreenJackets sent eight to the plate to pull to within a run in the eighth. With the bases loaded and no one out, Raynor Campbell worked a leadoff walk off Clay Schrader - the same pitcher he took deep for a two-run home run to tie Monday's game. After Schrader recovered to strike out Josh Mazzola and Duvall, Ryan Scoma drilled an 0-2 fastball into right-center to plate two and pull the GreenJackets to within one. Harris, however, struck out looking with the tying run at third to end the rally.

Neither starter worked past the fifth inning, as the teams combined to use eight pitchers in the contest. Austin Fleet (1-2) allowed eight runs - four earned - on nine hits and three walks in 4.1 innings for the GreenJackets. Scott Copeland couldn't get out of the fifth, leaving with the bases loaded and a four-run Delmarva lead.

Cameron Roth (1-0) worked 2.1 innings to get the win for the Shorebirds. Schrader threw two scoreless innings of two-hit baseball, striking out four.

Shawn Sanford (0-1, 1.74) will get the start for the GreenJackets on Friday night in the fourth game of the five-game series. He'll face Delmarva lefty Tim Berry (0-0, 8.53). First pitch will come at 7:05 with the pregame action beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
