April 21, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - Cory Vaughn doubled home the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a late comeback and deliver a 6-5 Savannah Sand Gnats win in front of 3,005 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium Thursday night. It was the second night in a row that Savannah used a four-run inning to overtake the Legends. The Gnats are 5-2 on their current home stand, which includes four one-run victories.
Down 4-2 entering the eighth, C Albert Cordero began the crucial inning by beating out an infield grounder. The Gnats (7-7) then loaded the bases for the top of the order. Consecutive bases-loaded walks drawn by CF Rafael Fernandez and SS Robbie Shields evened the game at 4-4. Then, with two outs and the bases still loaded, DH Cory Vaughn lined a double down the right field line scoring two to give the Gnats a 6-4 lead. Fernandez, who was transferred to Savannah from St. Lucie earlier in the day Thursday, was 3-for-4 with two doubles in his 2011 Savannah debut.
Lexington (7-8) put a scare into the Gnats in the ninth. With a run home, the Legends loaded the bases against reliever Josh Edgin. However, Edgin struck out Legends' SS Jiovanni Mier looking and then DH Chris Wallace swinging to end the game and secure his fourth save.
LHP Angel Cuan earned the win for Savannah for his three innings of scoreless relief behind starter Erik Goeddel. Cuan gave up just two singles and finished his night by retiring the final seven batters in a row.
The Gnats had scoring opportunities all game long, getting a runner to second or third in every single inning except the seventh.
Game four of the five-game series will be Friday night when Savannah will send RHP Gonzalez Germen (1-1, 9.45) to the hill against Lexington RHP Juan Minaya (0-1, 9.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates will open at 6 pm. The pregame show will begin on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com at 6:50 pm.
