Shorebirds Survive Late Rally And Win 8-7

Augusta, Ga. - After losing in walk off fashion in games one and two of the series, the Delmarva Shorebirds (6-9) found a way to close out the Augusta GreenJackets (5-10) in game three by a final of 8-7 on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Shorebirds recorded double-digit hits for a third consecutive night (13). In addition, the Shorebirds have scored 47 runs over their seven-game road trip.

Trent Mummey finished with three RBIs while Jonathan Schoop, Manny Machado, Kieron Pope and Kipp Schutz each had two hits.

The Shorebirds were first to crack the scoreboard in the top of the first. Mummey drew a leadoff walk, his tenth walk of the season. Schoop then singled to extend his hitting streak to nine games. After a Pope walk loaded the bases, Schutz bounced a slow moving grounder in the hole on the right side of the infield to bring home Mummey.

The GreenJackets took their first lead in the bottom of the first inning. Carlos Willoughby drew a leadoff walk. Raynor Campbell followed with a single. Then, Adam Duvall singled to score Willoughby. Later in the inning, Devin Harris hit an RBI single to plate Campbell.

The Shorebirds took the lead right back in the third inning with two runs. Schoop delivered a single to left field to open the inning. Then, Manny Machado doubled down the left field line. Pope followed with his 11th RBI of the season to bring in Schoop to tie the game at 2-2. Then, Schutz grounded towards short to score Machado, which gave the Shorebirds a 3-2 lead.

In the fourth, the Shorebirds added another run to increase the lead to 4-2. Mychal Givens started the inning with a single up the middle. Givens advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pick off attempt at first. Givens advanced to third on a passed ball charged to catcher Dan Burkhart. Mummey followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Givens.

The Shorebirds extended the lead the fifth inning with four more runs. Machado drew a walk to open the inning, his tenth walk of the season. Pope followed with a single to advance Machado to second. Then, second baseman Carlos Willoughby threw low and wide to second on a grounder by Schutz to score Machado. With Pope at third, Michael Ohlman blasted a double to the wall in left field to give the ‘Birds a 6-2 lead. Later in the inning, Mummey hit a soft flare into center field to score Schutz and Ohlman.

The GreenJackets pulled within one run in the eighth inning. Shorebirds reliever Cameron Roth walked two of the first three hitters and gave up a single to Chris Lofton to load the bases with no outs. Roth was replaced on the hill by Clay Schrader. Raynor Campbell drew a walk to force home Rafael Rodriguez. After Schrader struck out the next two batters, Ryan Scoma hit a two run single into right-center field to cut the deficit to 8-7. Schrader fanned Devin Harris looking to end the threat.

In the ninth, Schrader struck out Carlos Willoughby looking with the tying run at second base to close out the game. Schrader struck out four batters in two innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Cameron Roth earned his first win of the season over 2.1 innings pitched. He allowed three hits and three runs.

The Shorebirds and GreenJackets square off in game four of the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Tim Berry is the scheduled starter for the Delmarva Shorebirds.
