Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
After a late hit in the series closer at home against Fargo Sunday afternoon, Goldeyes shortstop Price Kendall refused to admit that he was a blossoming clutch player for his team.
Maybe it's because he knew he wasn't the only one on this team who could come through in the clutch.
Opening a series in Sioux Falls Monday night, the Winnipeg Goldeyes once again pulled out some late game heroics, putting up a four-run eighth inning on their way to a 6-4 win over the Fighting Pheasants.
Kendall had a key single in the eighth, driving home a hustling Justin Bass, who had just recorded a three-RBI triple in the same inning. Once again, the Goldeyes bats were strong, recording a season-high 12 hits, which included Alan Rick's second home run of the season, a solo shot he hit in the second inning.
While the offense was strong, the pitching staff managed to get the job done with some effort, as six pitchers came to the mound. Erick Carrillo, who joined the team in Sioux Falls after having problems getting his passport. Pitching the same night he joined his new team, he put in five innings of work: striking out two, walking three and allowing two hits and a run.
"He's a guy we had high expectations for and it's a tough situation to be in, joining the team and pitching in the same night," said Goldeyes pitching coach Brendan Sagara in a Sports Radio 1290 post-game show. "He did a great job though, with some great action on his pitches."
Joining Carrillo on the mound was, in order, William Jackel, Zach Baldwin, Chad Benefield, Ian Thomas, and Jamie Vermilyea. Zach Baldwin recorded the win, his first on the season, and Vermilyea recorded his third save in five games. Errors remained a recurring problem for Winnipeg, as they had the only two errors in the game Monday night, increasing their total to eight on the season in just five games.
The Goldeyes will play three more games in Sioux Falls in the next three nights. The first pitch for each game will be thrown at 7:05 local time and you can catch all the action on Sports Radio 1290.
