Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Captains improved to one game over .500 for the third time this season with an 8-5 win in game one of their day/night doubleheader against the Sioux City Explorers on Monday morning. Captains third baseman Mike Provencher slugged out three hits and three RBIs, also scoring twice in the win. Danial McHenry (1-0) battled through five innings to pick up the victory in his first start of the season.

Manager Vince Moore modified his lineup for the first game, leaving starters Joey Gathright, Bryan Sabatella (who is day-to-day with a pulled hamstring), and Brian Peterson out of the starting nine. Moore started Robert Perry in centerfield and hit him in the lead off spot. Andrew Kuhn got his first professional game in behind the plate and right fielder Alex Cowart got his first professional start.

The Captains scored three in the first inning off Explorers starter Matthew Rossignol. Perry led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when Bryan Fricther also walked with one out. Andres Rodriguez would knock both runners in with an RBI double. Two batters later Provencher would get his first RBI of the day, scoring Rodriguez.

Sioux City would tie things up off McHenry in the third. Left fielder T.J. Bohn walked with the bases loaded, then first baseman Javier Brito hit a two-run single. Yet the Captains never relinquished the lead, coming back with two in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth. In the fourth, they played small ball. Shortstop Uriak Marquez led off the inning with a bunt single. Provencher then produced a bunt single of his own. After Joe Urtuzuastegui moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, Kuhn picked up his first two RBIs with a single scoring Marquez and Provenceher.

Provencher added two more RBIs to his total in the fifth with a two run triple, scoring Rodriguez and Marquez. The Explorers would get two to come within three runs of the lead with an RBI groundball for right fielder Derek Schermerhorn and an RBI single by catcher Tyler Goodro.

Captains reliever Ben Shivers forced Javier Brito into an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play to end the seventh. The Explorers would leave another man on in the eighth against Mark Haynes. Then in the ninth closer Dan Griffin picked up his second save, but not before surrendering a walk and a double to bring the tying run to the plate. He got Brito to fly out to right to preserve the Captains win. Game two of the Captains double-dip with the Explorers takes place at 7:05 p.m. with Shreveport-Bossier's Richard Salazar taking the mound against Sioux City hurler John Leonard. For the nightcap it's Jose Cuervo Margarita & Maker's Mark Monday, with half price margaritas and frozen drinks all night long. Gates open at 6:05 p.m.
