SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants continued an early-season skid with a 6-4 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the home opener on Monday night. The Pheasants fell to 1-4 on the season facing their old Northern League foes for the first time since 2005.

Winnipeg broke a 2-2 in the eighth inning with Justin Bass's three-run triple. Winnipeg had loaded the bases with a leadoff walk and two back-to-back singles. Price Kendall followed two batters later with a single to cash in Bass and extend the lead to 6-2.

The Pheasants tried to climb back in with RBI singles from Reggie Abercrombie and Hunter Jobes in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 6-4. But the Pheasants left the bases loaded when Winnipeg reliever Ian Thomas struck out Kevin Carby to end the inning.

Pheasants starter Terrence Engles made his Sioux Falls debut and kept Winnipeg in check. He allowed a solo home run to Goldeyes catcher Alan Rick in the second inning. A wild pitch let in Winnipeg's second run in the fifth. Engles tossed six innings, yielding six hits and three walks. He fanned two.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Engles' former teammate-turned-foe Zach Baldwin (1-0) earned the win in relief for Winnipeg despite allowing the two Pheasant runs in the eighth. The two were teammates in the Washington Nationals farm system in 2009. Winnipeg starter Erick Carrillo last five innings and gave up one run on two hits.

Sioux Falls reliever Andrew Pluta (0-1) took the loss.

The four-game series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17. Probable starters are Winnipeg LHP Isaac Hess (1-0, 0.00) vs. Sioux Falls RHP Ben Moore (1-0, 0.00). It's a Double-Play Tuesday. Fans can purchase two grandstand tickets for the price of one.

Notes: Joe Anthonsen and Steve Shirley were both ejected in the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes...Anthonsen made the start at shortstop while Kevin Carby was the designated hitter...Every Pheasant in the lineup had a hit except for Carby...The Pheasants played their first error-free game of the season.
