Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-15) scored eight runs, but it was not enough as an 11-8 defeat by the Wichita Wingnuts (9-12) send the Canaries to their seventh consecutive loss in front of a home crowd of 3,917 on Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

After a rain storm delayed the start of the game by one hour and 20 minutes, the Wichita Wingnuts were quick to get on the scoreboard. In the top of the first inning, Josh Horn reached on an infield single, and got to third on a pair of wild pitches. Greg Porter grounded out to score Horn for an early 1-0 advantage. An inning later, the Wingnuts doubled their lead when Kelly Hunt doubled and scored on a single by Joe Muich giving Wichita a 2-0 lead.

Wichita widened their lead in the fourth inning. With two men on, Michael Thompson singled to score Stephen Pearson for a 3-0 lead. Horn drove in Joe Muich to make it 4-0 in favor of the Wingnuts. Finally, Porter doubled with the bases loaded to bring in three more runs and put Wichita up by a touchdown, 7-0.

The Canaries rallied in the bottom of the fourth. Cody Haerther started the inning with a walk, and then the Birds got five consecutive singles from Beau Torbert, Cory Harris, Trevor Lawhorn, Patrick Reilly, and J.D. Reininger. The last four singles drove in runs to put the Birds within three, 7-4. With two on, Ken Lup bunted into a fielder's choice, but a wild pitch gave the Birds the runners on second and third that they were looking for. Joe Anthonsen brought them home with a single that deflected off the glove of the pitcher and past the second baseman. The runs by Reininger and Lup pulled the Canaries within one, 7-6.

From there the Wingnuts pulled away. In the fifth inning, Wichita got one run back when Thompson doubled to score Pearson, and give the Wingnuts a two-run cushion, 8-6. An inning later, Dustan Mohr doubled to score two and put Wichita ahead by four, 10-6. One more run in the eighth gave the Wingnuts an 11-6 advantage.

The Birds got back on the scoreboard in the eighth inning. Anthonsen singled and Hutting walked to put two on. After a wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, Haerther singled up the left-field line to score both Anthonsen and Hutting, and get the Canaries within three, 11-8. The Birds would get no closer in the loss.

Gabe Medina (8-3) gave up six runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings, but picked up the win for the Wingnuts. Travis Kane (3-8) suffered the loss for the Canaries in allowing eight runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings. Joe D'Alessandro kept the Canaries off the scoreboard in the ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the season.

The Canaries and Wingnuts continue the weekend series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Saturday's promotion will feature "Take Me Out Harry: A Harry Caray Tribute." The game will feature a post-game fireworks show presented by Sanford Health that was postponed from Friday's game due to curfew.
