St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA (July 31, 2009) - Thankfully the St. Paul have more home games than road games left in the season because they haven't played well away from Midway Stadium. Their five game winning streak was halted at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night with a 9-4 loss to the Sioux City Explorers, moving their record on the road to 11 games under .500.
In the second inning Saints starter Mark Moriarty struggled with his control. With the Saints trailing 1-0 he gave up a lead off double to James Boone. Dustin Jones sacrificed him to third and Boone scored on Greg Stevens' sacrifice fly. That's when the control became an issue. Moriarty walked Jason Colson and hit Brett Mieras. Nick McCoola added an RBI single to make it 3-0. Derek Schermerhorn was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then back-to-back walks to Alex Llanos and Justin Nelson forced in runs to make it 5-0.
The Saints got two runs back in the third when Jason Cooper deposited a two-run shot over the right field wall, his fifth of the season, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Explorers, however, answered in the bottom of the fourth as Mieras led off with a single. He went to third on a hit and run by McCoola, who singled through the left side. A safety squeeze by Schermerhorn made it 6-2. Llanos added an RBI double which chased Moriarty and allowed Todd Mathison to make his professional debut. He got the first man he faced, but gave up an RBI double to Boone.
After an hour and five minute rain delay the Saints couldn't do much against Explorers starter Ryan Harris. They did add two runs in the eighth inning when Steve Butler led off with a walk and with one out Andrew Schmiesing tripled him home. Cooper followed with an RBI single for the final run of the night for the Saints. He finished the night 2-3 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored.
Mathison was impressive in his professional debut out of the bullpen going 4.2 innings allowing one run on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
The same two teams meet Saturday night at Lewis and Clark Park in game two of the three game series at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Reed Dickert (3-4, 5.17) to the mound against Explorers LHP Trevor Fox (4-2, 3.57). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
