Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Pensacola trounced Fort Worth in a 6-0 game in Pensacola Friday night. The Pelicans' starter Dane DeValk threw seven innings of shutout four-hit ball before deferring to Ulysses Roque, who was perfect for the final six outs. The Pelicans scored five of their six runs in the first two innings, and Kevin Reynolds went 4-5.

Kevin Reynolds led off the bottom of the first with a double and set the tone for the rest of the game. After Francisco Leandro put a sacrifice bunt down to move Reynolds to third, Chase Burch grounded out to the shortstop but drove in Reynolds for the Pelicans' first run.

Pensacola started the bottom of the second with a Lou Palmisano walk, and Adam Darby followed with a one-out single. Reynolds batted next with a RBI-single to score Palmisano, and Leandro scored both Darby and Reynolds with a double. Burch thanked Leandro with a RBI single, and the Pelicans led Fort Worth 5-0 after two innings.

Pensacola added their last run in the bottom of the fifth, when Palmisano singled with one out and moved to third on a Lester Contreras double. Reynolds followed up with his third of four hits, batting in Palmisano to lead the Cats 6-0, a score that would go final.

Dane DeValk earned the win in his second strong start in a row. Seven innings, four hits, and no runs is a line score any pitcher can be happy with, and his four strikeouts and two walks are commendable. Throwing just 80 pitches keeps a pitching coach happy, too.

Ulysses Roque was as solid as ever in retiring all the batters he faced in order to secure the Pelicans win, their ninth in eleven games.

The Pelicans' pitchers were as good as the hitters, with four Pelicans having multiple-hits and collecting five doubles as a team. Kevin Reynolds went 4-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Lou Palmisano went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. Contreras and Darby each went two for four, Contreras hitting a two-bagger.

The Pelicans and Cats meet again tomorrow in the second game of this three-game series. Adam Brandenburg will start the game with the ball for the Pelicans, and the Cats will throw Ryan Riddle. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., as the Woodstock Weekend continues with a fireworks extravaganza to follow the game's conclusion. Jerry's Kids, a Grateful Dead tribute band, will entertain fans before, during, and after the game. Tickets are still available online at www.pensacolapelicans.com, via phone at (850) 934-8444, or in person at Pensacola-area Circle K locations. Walk-up tickets are available at the Pelicans' box office, located at Pelican Park and open an hour before game time.
