Pensacola Pelicans News Release

SITE: Jim Spooner Field at Pelican Park in Pensacola, FL (July 31- August 2, 2009)

TIME: 6:35 p.m. Central Time on Friday, 6:05 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

ABOUT THE SERIES:

The Pelicans and Cats have split series sweeps so far this year. When Fort Worth visited Pensacola for the first time this season, the visitors won 14-10 on June 8, 5-3 a day later, and 4-2 on Wednesday. Pensacola returned the favor when they visited Fort Worth, defeating the Cats 7-4 on July 3, 11-7 in 13 innings on Independence Day, and completed the sweep with a 3-2 win.

The Pelicans won eight straight games from July 17-27, their longest winning streak since the 2004 season. The Pelicans have dropped their last two games to the Wingnuts in Wichita however, but the Captains have lost their last two as well. Currently the Pelicans are in second-place, 1.5 games behind the Shreveport-Bossier Captains.

Fort Worth, the first-half division winners, are guaranteed entry into the first-round of playoffs. Thus far in the second-half, the Cats have a record of 9-11, and are in the cellar of the South Division. The Cats' lineup features Patrick O'Sullivan, currently fourth in the league with 12 home runs; four of them have come against Pensacola.

WHO TO WATCH:

Pensacola: Chase Burch -DH- The All-Star slugger finished second in the Home Run Derby on June 21. Currently fourth in the league with a .353 average, Burch has eight home runs and 44 RBI.

Marcos Rodriguez -2B- Batting .330 with 12 doubles and 41 RBI, Rodriguez always seem to come up with a timely hit, driving in four runs in the Wichita series, and five against Sioux City. Rodriguez had a 21-game hitting streak earlier this season.

Fort Worth: Patrick O'Sullivan -DH- The slugger's 12 home runs rank fourth in the league. Against Pensacola O'Sullivan is batting .440, slugging 1.000, and has hit four home runs, not bad from the starting designated hitter for the South in the All Star game on July 21.

John Allen -1B - Allen is third in the league with 55 RBI and is batting .314. He's hit 10 homeruns and 17 doubles. With these numbers, it's not surprising Allen was the starting first baseman in the All Star game.
