Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Dayton, OH - After scoring just two runs in its last 26 innings against Cedar Rapids pitching, Dayton slugged eight hits and eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back in a 9-4 win over Cedar Rapids Saturday night.
The Kernels went down quietly in their half in the first inning, and in the bottom half, the Dragons did not. Edwin Arroyo led off the game with a single to put a runner on first, but after two outs, he was still there with two retired in the inning. The next batter Austin Hendrick then lifted a double off the wall in left field, scoring Arroyo all the first from first, which started a run of seven straight two-out Dayton hits capped off with an Arroyo two-run home run in his second at-bat of the inning making the tally 8-0 after the end of one.
That 8-0 score remained the count up until the top of the fifth inning when the Cedar Rapids offense started to fight back. Keoni Cavaco led off the inning with a single and scored on an Ernie Yake two-run blast over the right field wall for his second home run of the season, setting the game at 8-2. The next batter Tanner Schobel then walked, and after advancing to third, he scored on a Ben Ross ground out making 8-3 Dayton.
In the sixth, Cedar Rapids cut into the advantage even more. A Jeferson Morales double started off the inning, then two batters later, Yake grabbed his third RBI on the night on a single to center to make it an 8-4 game.
That four-run deficit, though, would be the closest the Kernels would get. With one out in the bottom half of the sixth, Austin Callahan stole the momentum right back from Cedar Rapids with a solo home run pushing the Dragons' advantage back up to five at 9-4 which would be the final.
The Kernels had their best chance to cut it closer in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs, but the Dragons got out of the inning unscathed, and pitched 1-2-3 frames in both the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the 9-4 victory.
The loss for the Kernels (31-25) is the third in the series against Dayton (29-27) as Cedar Rapids falls to 6-5 on the twelve-game road trip. The series and road trip wrap up tomorrow at 12:10 with Jaylen Nowlin on the mound taking on the Dragons and right-hander Thomas Farr.
