Win first game on home ice in 18 days to move closer to playoff spot, division title

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The East Coast Hockey League's Greenville Grrrowl beat the Mobile Mysticks 4-1 at the BI-LO Center Wednesday in their first home game in 18 days. The win was their 15 in the last 16 games on home ice.

The Grrrowl will clinch a playoff spot with any combination of five standings points gained by themselves or lost by the Florida Everblades. The Grrrowl can also clinch the Southeast Division Championship with any combination of nine standings points gained by themselves or lost by the Pee Dee Pride, as well as eight standings points lost by the Columbia Inferno and Augusta Lynx, seven standings points lost by the Kelly Cup Champion South Carolina Stingrays and five lost by Florida.

Jonathan Roy opened the scoring with his 19th goal of the season, his 15th with the Grrrowl, at 19:38 of the first period on assists from Damon Whitten and David Kaczowka. Roy was returning from a two-game absence after a bout with the flu while Kaczowka had been activated from a one-month stint on the injured reserve earlier in the day.

Ryan Stewart made it 2-0 Grrrowl with his 13th goal of the season 12:17 into the second period. Stewart one-timed a beautiful pass from captain Sean Venedam who upped his scoring streak to six games with the assist. Roy had the other helper. Roger Trudeau gave the Grrrowl a 3-0 advantage with an unassisted goal, his team-leading 31st goal of the year, 3:56 later.

Mobile made a game of it when Hugues Gervais scored his team-leading 29th goal of the season 6:37 into the third period on assists from Ryan Knox and John Sadowksi, but the Grrrowl iced the game with another unassisted goal at 12:59.

Steve Rymsha emerged from the penalty box after serving a two-minute minor for Kaczowka and outmuscled a defender in front of the Mobile net for his 26th goal of the season.

The Grrrowl were 1 for 2 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill. They also outshot Mobile 34-32 for their ninth straight shots on goal advantage.

The Grrrowl will host Augusta Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The first one-thousand fans will receive a free Grrrowl puck courtesy of Bell South, the Real Yellow Pages and Charter Communications. In addition, if the Grrrowl win, fans can redeem their ticket stubs at the BI-LO Center box office for a free ticket to the Tuesday March 26th game versus Pee Dee. The Grrrowl will also visit the Charlotte Checkers Sunday at 6 p.m.

All games, and "The Grrrowl Hour" Mondays at 7 p.m. live from Dougal Maguire's on Laurens Road, are broadcast on Newsradio 1330 & 950 WORD-AM and at grrrowl.com.
