Mysticks pick up 17th shootout loss of the season
The Mobile Mysticks spotted the South Carolina three first period goals as they fell to the Stingrays 5-4 in a shootout.
Joel Irving's seventh round goal in the shootout was the difference as the Mysticks could not beat South Carolina goaltender Jamie Hodson. David Seitz scored his first of the contest just 1:35 into the contest as he picked up a loose puck that took a weird bounce off a seam in the glass and sat in the slot. Seitz fired the puck past Hewitt to give South Carolina the 1-0 lead. Jeff Boulanger and Brendon Concannon added the assists. Seitz pushed his second past Hewitt as he sat on the goal crease at the 14:51 mark of the first period. Concannon again added the assists.
South Carolina went up 3-0 as Seitz completed the natural hat trick just two minutes later. Trevor Johnson picked up the assist on the tally. Tyler Deis tallied his first goal as a Mystick with just 1:55 remaining in the first period. Deis gathered a loose puck in the neutral zone and fired a laser past Hodson to get on the board.
A nifty tic-tac-toe play set up Josh Harrold's goal at the midway mark of the second period. Deis left a drop pass for Brent Wishart who fed Harrold waiting in the high slot.
South Carolina answered a minute and a half later as Dan Heilman beat Hewitt to push the Stingray's lead back to two. Jeff Boulanger and Ryan Brindley added the assists.
Kevin Grimes laser ricocheted off two posts before finding the back of the net for the Mysticks third goal with just under five minutes left in the third period. Brent Wishart and Tyler Deis added the assists on Grimes' second of the season.
The Mysticks pulled goaltender Greg Hewitt for the extra attacker when Ryan Knox tied the contest up at four as he fired a laser through traffic in front of Hodson. Jason Elders and B.J. Kilbourne added the assists on the play.
Neither team gained an advantage in the overtime, sending the game into a shootout.
Mobile is now 26-22-17 for 69 points and in a tie for fifth place in the ECHL's Southwestern division with the New Orleans Brass.
The Mysticks conclude their five game road trip on Wednesday when they battle the Grrrowl in Greenville before coming home to host the Macon Whoopee on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Mobile Civic Center.
