Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - If the Fresno Falcons' commemorative St. Patrick's Day jerseys didn't bring the luck of the Irish on the ice, they were certainly lucky off the ice. The Falcons' 2nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Jersey Auction last Saturday night raised $19,250 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. The auction, which followed the completion of the Falcons' game against the Idaho Steelheads, is one of the biggest fundraisers that the team holds each year.
Brodie Coffin earned the honor of the most expensive jersey sold at the event, raking in a whopping $2,025. David Mitchell fell next in line with his game-worn jersey going for $1,400. Greg Spenrath and Kris Porter each pulled in $1,200 for their jerseys. Joe Frederick reeled in $1,175, and Jason Weaver took in $1000 to round out the top moneymakers. All of the jerseys sold for at least $400, with nearly half of them fetching between $600 and $850.
During the past year, the Falcons have helped raise nearly $150,000 for a variety of charitable causes. The total includes the $12,085 raised during last year's St. Patrick's Day auction, which benefited Arc Fresno, $10,000 for the Povorello House at the team's Summer Blast event, and $20,850 for the New York Police and Fire Widows and Children Benefit Fund with the sale of game-worn red, white and blue jerseys. The Falcons also helped raise $85,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk this past September. Falcons President John Tull served as the Honorary Chairman for the event while the Falcons staff coordinated the entire volunteer effort.
The team is still helping to raise money for the Idaho Steelheads Fight Against Cancer to benefit Wendi Lund, who is the girlfriend of Steelheads player Derek Paget and suffers from terminal cancer. The ongoing fundraising has brought in more than $2,000 to date with more activities planned throughout the rest of the season.
