Earthquakes Weekly Update: June 17, 2019

June 17, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - San Jose Earthquakes News Release

The San Jose Earthquakes advanced to the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Sacramento Republic FC 4-3 on Tuesday evening at Avaya Stadium. Republic FC took the lead with an early goal in the first two minutes of the match, but the Earthquakes were able to recover and bring the match level at 2-2 before halftime. Midfielder Vako scored a pair of goals in the second half to give San Jose the advantage in the final minutes of the match, resulting in the team's third consecutive win (2014, 2015, and 2019) over Sacramento in U.S. Open Cup play.

San Jose will take on LAFC in the tournament's Round of 16 on Thursday, June 20 at Banc of California Stadium. It will mark the fourth competitive meeting against LAFC and the first meeting between the two teams in U.S. Open Cup play. Thursday's match is set for 7:30 p.m. PT and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

EARTHQUAKES NOTES

Open Cup Action

The Quakes now hold a 18-15 all-time record in the U.S. Open Cup, including a 16-3 record against non-MLS teams. San Jose advanced to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last five years (2015, 2017).

NorCal Rivalry

San Jose now holds a perfect 3-0 record against Sacramento Republic FC, having defeated the side in 2014, 2015 and 2019.

First Timers

Midfielders Magnus Eriksson and Cristian Espinoza scored their first career goals in U.S. Open Cup play in Tuesday's match against Sacramento Republic FC. Eriksson (4) and Espinoza (3) have a combined total of seven goals across all competitions this season.

Super Sub

Midfielder Vako scored two goals, including the game-winner, after coming on as a second-half substitute. It marked his first two career goals in U.S. Open Cup play. The Georgian is now at three goal across all competitions this season.

On the Road

Thursday's Round of 16 match will take place at Banc of California Stadium. The Earthquakes hold an all-time record of 9-8 in U.S Open Cup road matches.

June 21, 2016 - Signed Midfielder Shea Salinas to New Multi-year Contract

Salinas was originally selected in the second round (No. 15 overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by the Earthquakes. He ranks highly in several categories of the Earthquakes' record book, including second in matches played (253), second in assists (45), and tied for sixth in game-winning goals (5).

June 22, 2017 - Signed Midfielder Vako as a Designated Player

The San Jose Earthquakes signed Vako to a Designated Player contract on June 22, 2017. The Georgian International has since tallied 16 goals and 8 assists in 59 appearances for San Jose.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATE

Reno 1868 FC remain unbeaten at home in 2019 after Saturday night's 4-2 triumph over LA Galaxy II at Greater Nevada Field. LA Galaxy II jumped to an early lead in the third minute when forward Frank Lopez scored on penalty kick, but Reno were quick to react to the setback with two goals in the six minutes that followed. Forward Corey Hertzog tied the match at one goal apiece in the seventh minute, and forward Danny Musovski scored his first goal of the season in the 13th minute to give Reno the advantage (2-1).

Herzog has not looked back since opening his scoring account at Reno 1868 FC with a pair of goals against Tulsa Roughnecks FC (Saturday, May 4). Hertzog has tallied seven in his last six matches.

LA Galaxy II forward Augustine Williams' goal in the 30th minute evened the score at 2-2 before halftime. Reno 1868 FC midfielder Sam Gleadle and forward Aidan Apocada tallied goals in the 60th and 65th minute, respectively, giving Reno a two-goal lead that the team would hold until the final whistle.

Reno 1868 FC's unbeaten record at Greater Nevada Field is extended to 4-0-3. They have the opportunity to build on that record when they host Phoenix Rising FC on Tuesday, June 18. Tomorrow's match is set for 7:15 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN3.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The 2019 Summer Showcase and Playoffs kicks off today and the Boys' Academy U-19s kick off their playoffs schedule in a match against the Philadelphia Union. They will take on Nomads SC on Wednesday, June 19, and Sockers FC on Friday, June 21. Full details on times and locations for Boys' Academy Playoffs matches can be found here.

The Girls' Academy U-15 program have their have their first match of Playoffs set for Saturday, June 22. The match will be played at 11:00 a.m. PT at SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, CA. More information on the Girls' Academy Playoffs schedule can be found here.

The Girls' Academy U-17s begin their Summer Showcase campaign on Sunday, June 23 when they take on Sky Blue - NYSC at 1:00 p.m. PT.
