ATLANTA - Atlanta United returns to action Tuesday when it travels to face Columbus Crew SC in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at MAPFRE Stadium. Atlanta has advanced to the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup each year since joining MLS in 2017. Atlanta defeated Charleston Battery 3-1 on June 13 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga. The Battery opened the scoring in the 20th minute but Atlanta found an equalizer from Romario Williams in the 79th minute to send the match into extra time. In the second period of extra time, substitutes Justin Meram and Brandon Vazquez connected twice, with Vazquez scoring the game-winner in the 110th minute and then adding his second goal in the 121st minute.
Columbus Crew SC advanced after beating Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-0 at MAPFRE Stadium on June 11. David Accam scored the game's only goal on an assist from Pedro Santos. This will be the first meeting between the two sides in U.S. Open Cup play, however Atlanta owns a 4-1-0 record in MLS regular season matches against Columbus.
