San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes arrived in Santa Barbara, Calif. over the weekend for their two-week preseason training camp. The team is currently training twice per day ahead of their home opener against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, Feb. 26. Last week, the club announced the signing of goalkeeper Matt Bersano to a one-year contract with a club option for 2023 and that defender Marcos Lopez was called to the Peru National Team for two FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Colombia (Jan. 28) and Ecuador (Feb. 1).

Additionally, the international friendly between Chivas de Guadalajara and Club Leon at PayPal Park, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2021, has been rescheduled to Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. PT. All tickets previously purchased will remain valid for the rescheduled date. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, beginning Tuesday, January 25 at 10 a.m. PT, .

EARTHQUAKES NOTES

Earthquakes Sign Goalkeeper Matt Bersano to New Contract

Bersano, 29, has been on the Quakes' roster since 2017 and is among the longest tenured players on the team. Over the past five years, Bersano made 60 appearances on loan with the Quakes' former USL Championship affiliate Reno 1868 FC, where he was a two-time USL Team of the Week honoree and named Reno's Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017 and 2018.

Marcos Lopez Called to Peru National Team for World Cup Qualifiers

Peru will face Colombia at Estadio Metropolitano on Friday, Jan. 28 (1 p.m. PT) before hosting Ecuador at Estadio Nacional on Tuesday, Feb. 1 (6 p.m. PT). Peru is currently in fifth place in CONMEBOL, with four teams gaining automatic qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the fifth-place team advancing to the inter-confederation playoffs.

A look back on important moments in Quakes history that took place during the week of Jan. 24 - 30.

Jan. 26, 2018 - Signed Gilbert Fuentes to Homegrown Player contract

The Quakes signed then 15-year-old Gilbert Fuentes to a Homegrown Player contract on Jan. 26, 2018, becoming at the time the youngest player in Earthquakes history. Fuentes has made three appearances for the Quakes since signing ahead of the 2018 season, mostly playing on loan with Reno 1868 FC (2018-20) and Austin Bold FC (2021).

Jan. 26, 1999 - Acquired Goalkeeper Joe Cannon

The Earthquakes acquired goalkeeper Joe Cannon in his first stint with the Quakes on Jan. 26, 1999, as an MLS allocated player. During his career, Cannon spent seven seasons with the Quakes and still leads the Earthquakes goalkeeping records in games started (171), minutes played (15,561), wins (66) and saves (693). Cannon currently serves as an analyst for Earthquakes radio broadcasts.

Jan. 30, 2014 - Unveiled club's new logo

The Quakes unveiled their new club logo at San Pedro Square Market on Jan. 30, 2014. The logo and new uniforms were unveiled to fans during a special presentation that included current and past Earthquakes players, and a performance by the Old Firm Casuals, featuring Bay Area punk legend Lars Frederiksen.

ACADEMY UPDATE

Over the weekend, Earthquakes Academy faced De Anza Force, with the U13s winning 3-0 and the U14s falling 5-0.
