San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes will face USL PRO affiliate Sacramento Republic FC in the fourth round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Kezar Stadium on Wednesday, June 11. Tickets for the match are on sale now and available at sjearthquakes.com, at the Earthquakes' Front Office at 451 El Camino Real, Suite 220 in Santa Clara or at the box office on game day.
Sacramento advanced with a 6-0 win against the Fresno Fuego (PDL) on Wednesday at Cosumnes River College Stadium. Six different players showed up on the scoresheet for a Republic FC squad that improved to 8-3-1 in all competitions during their inaugural season. They have won six games in a row, including wins over the Ventura County Fusion and Fresno in U.S. Open Cup play.
The Earthquakes and Sacramento signed an affiliate agreement on Jan. 23, 2014. San Jose players made history for Republic FC early in the season; Mike Fucito recorded a goal and an assist in their first win, 3-1 against Chivas USA on April 7, and Adam Jahn scored the first home goal in a 2-1 loss against Harrisburg City on April 26.
San Jose will participate in the U.S. Open Cup for the 10th time in team history in 2014 and holds a 12-10 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup play. The Quakes best finish in the tournament came in 2004 when they advanced to the semifinals before losing to the Kansas City Wizards 1-0. Ronald Cerritos is the club's all-time leader in goals in Open Cup competition with four goals and one assist.
ABOUT U.S. OPEN CUP
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 100 consecutive years dating back to 1914. This year's winner will earn $250,000 and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will take home $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will earn a $15,000 cash prize. D.C. United is the defending U.S. Open Cup champion, having won its third tournament title (following triumphs in 1996 and 2008) after a tense 1-0 road victory over Real Salt Lake on Oct. 1, 2013. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
