Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers will play host to Premier Development League (PDL) club Orlando City U23s in the fourth round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Providence Park on Tuesday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific), it was determined tonight following the tournament's third-round matches.
Tickets for the fourth-round U.S. Open Cup match are included in Timbers full-season ticket packages as Exhibition B, while individual tickets go on sale to the public starting Thursday at 12 noon (Pacific) online at www.timbers.com and at the Providence Park box office.
Portland enters the 2014 U.S. Open Cup tournament in the fourth round following the team's run to the semifinals in last year's edition. Orlando City U23s, the PDL affiliate of USL PRO club Orlando City, advanced to the fourth round after defeating USL PRO side Charleston Battery on Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. Tied 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra time, Orlando City U23s prevailed 12-11 in a dramatic, penalty-kick shootout.
All 16 U.S.-based clubs from Major League Soccer, including the Timbers, enter the 2014 U.S. Open Cup - the 101st edition of the tournament - in the fourth round.
In 2014, the U.S. Open Cup features 80 teams, the largest field in the tournament's modern era (1995-present). The U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer National Club Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Founded in 1914, the U.S. Open Cup will be conducted on a single-elimination, one-game knockout basis utilizing a tiered-bracket format.
The winner of the U.S. Open Cup earns a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League, receives $250,000 and will have its named engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports.
Last year, the Timbers made their deepest run in the tournament in their history reaching the semifinal round.
