Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Thursday, May 29, 2014) - Real Salt Lake will begin it 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup run on June 14 with a fourth round match at the NASL's Atlanta Silverbacks. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MT at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN 700 AM.
Atlanta beat Chattanooga FC of the NPSL 5-0 in the U.S. Open Cup third round on Wednesday night. The road win was Atlanta's first match of the 2014 Open Cup.
RSL finished runners-up in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, losing 1-0 to D.C. United at Rio Tinto Stadium in the Open Cup Final on Oct. 1, 2013. Real Salt Lake played Atlanta in the Open Cup fourth round last year, defeating the Silverbacks 3-2 after extra time on May 28, 2013 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. This 2014 Open Cup is the 101st edition of the tournament and features a record 80 teams, an increase from the 68 that entered the field last year. The expansion results in both the largest number of amateur teams (42) in the tournament proper as well as the largest contingent of pro clubs (38), with all Division I, II and III professional clubs participating in the tournament for the third-straight year.
Real Salt Lake will look to break the MLS record for longest unbeaten streak to start a season this Saturday, when it will look to improve to 13 games without a loss this year in a 1-v-2 matchup at league leaders Seattle Sounders FC. Saturday's match will kick at 2:00 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN 700 AM and 102.3 La Gran D FM.
