Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, May 28, 2014) - Chivas USA fell, 2-0, Wednesday night at the StubHub Center to the Portland Timbers in the second leg of the three-game season series. The Timbers were led by a pair of second-half tallies from forward Fanendo Adi to come away with the conference win in their only regular-season visit against the Rojiblancos.

The sides came out aggressive on the defensive end from the opening whistle looking to take control of the early possession battle. Portland tested Red-and-White goalkeeper Dan Kennedy in the 15th minute when Adi got off a shot on frame from the left side of the box, but Kennedy was able to collect the forward's roller.

The Red-and-White began generating solid looks by attacking on both wings, as midfielder Leandro Barrera got off a pair of crosses from the left side in the 33rd minute that were unable to connect toward the far post. Two minutes later, the Goats had their best look at going ahead when Marco Delgado sent a cross from the right side intended for Eric Avila as he made his run near the six-yard box. Avila, however, could not get a clean strike on the attempted side volley and bounced his shot over the crossbar.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the second half, Avila got off his second shot of the match in the 56th minute after collecting a free kick clearance. Avila squared up to goal and fired from about 25 yards out directly behind the arc, but his strike sailed wide left.

Portland got on the scoresheet first in the 65th minute when left back Jorge Villafaña connected with Adi on a low cross from the left sideline for the tap-in inside the six-yard box. The visitors doubled their lead to 2-0 six minutes later when Adi was left in a one-on-one meeting with Kennedy after receiving a threaded pass from Diego Valeri to find the back of the net for his second score of the contest.

Chivas continued to knock on the door but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Forward Ryan Finley - who came on as a sub in the 69th minute - brought down a short pass inside the box and looked to find the inside of the right post with a right-footed tap-in. The shot was off frame, though, and rolled wide and out of bounds. Portland keeper Donovan Ricketts kept the Goats scoreless in stoppage time by denying striker Erick Torres ' free kick from just outside the box that was headed for the upper left corner of the net with a leaping save, helping the visitors secure the road result.

Chivas USA will now close out their two-game homestand on Saturday when they host Eastern Conference side the Philadelphia Union at the StubHub Center beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The interconference showdown will mark the only meeting between the clubs during the regular season and will be televised on Time Warner Cable Deportes. Radio listeners can also catch the action on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKU 1220 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow the club on Twitter and Facebook .
