Early Grand Slam Sinks SeaWolves

An early grand slam sunk the SeaWolves in the finale of the series against Akron as Erie lost 6-0.

Sawyer Gipson-Long returned from the Injured List and made his first start since June 15 for Erie. He allowed singles to three of the first four batters in the first inning to load the bases. Juan Brito then connected on his first hit of the series, a grand slam, to give Akron a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Gipson-Long (5-5) took the loss but settled in to retire the next 11 hitters in order before reaching his limit of four innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Angel De Jesus entered in the fifth inning and a allowed a run on a pair of hits. Connor Kokx doubled and advanced to third on Petey Halpin's second hit. Kokx then scored Akron's fifth run on Jose Tena's sacrifice fly.

Tim Naugton entered for the sixth inning for Erie. His first batter was Johnathan Rodriguez, who connected on his second home run o the series to extend Akron's lead to 6-0.

Tommy Mace pitched for Akron and tossed six shutout inning. He allowed just one hit and walked two batters. Erie did not get the leadoff batter on against Mace at any point. Danny Serretti's third-inning single was the only base hit against him. Mace (1-2) earned his first Double-A win in his fourth outing.

Dillon Dingler's eighth-inning single was Erie's only other base hit. Gage Workman reached base twice on walks.

The SeaWolves announced a sellout crowd of 6,888.

Erie heads to Altoona to begin a road series against the Curve on Tuesday. First pitch is 6:00 as Keider Montero pitches against Sean Sullivan.
