Early Finish No Problem for RailRiders
May 7, 2021 - International League (IL) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Syracuse Mets 7-3 on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium for their third straight win. The contest was called after the top of the sixth due to inclement weather.
In his third game on a rehab assignment, Luke Voit went 0-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and two strikeouts, while playing four innings in the field at first base.
The RailRiders got on the board early against Mets starter Daniel Zamora, when Voit walked and scored on a two-run home run by Chris Gittens. It was the first home run of the season for Gittens, who hit 23 in Double-A in 2019.
Robinson Chirinos touched up Zamora (0-1) for a solo home run in the second, but the Mets struck back against Nick Green in the bottom of the frame. Martin Cervenka connected for a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-2.
SWB stormed back in the third, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four times to open up a 7-2 advantage. A two-run single for Ryan LaMarre was the big blow in the rally.
Syracuse scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third against Green to edge closer, but could do no more damage. In his Triple-A debut, Green lasted 2.1 innings, and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits, walking one and striking out three.
Nestor Cortes (1-0) retired all eight batters he faced in 2.2 innings to earn the win in his 2021 season debut.
After rain picked up in intensity following the top of the sixth, the game entered a rain delay and was called. Chirinos finished the game 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, it was his first Triple-A home run since August 11, 2013. Gittens walked three times after his home run, while as a team the RailRiders drew a season-high eight walks in the game.
The RailRiders continue their six-game series with the Mets on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse. The game can be heard on the RailRiders Baseball Network with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. and pregame coverage beginning at 6:15.
The RailRiders 2021 home opener at PNC Field is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 against Lehigh Valley at 6:35 p.m. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
