Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds had to contend with the early long ball against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, falling 5-3 on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Edward Cabrera (2-5) picked up his second win of the year for the Grasshoppers (27-28), going five innings and allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five. Jhon Peluffo (0-1) suffered the loss for the Shorebirds (30-25), surrendering four runs on six hits in five innings and striking out six Grasshoppers against one walk. Vincenzo Aiello came for a scoreless ninth and picked up his second save of the year.
The Greensboro offense found its stride early in the top of the first inning against Peluffo. Cameron Baranek worked his way on base with a two-out nine-pitch walk, and Lazaro Alonso followed with a moonshot to left center to make it 2-0. Marcos Rivera followed up with a solo blast of his own, moving it to 3-0.
After a 1-2-3 second inning for Peluffo, Seamus Curran opened up the home half of the second with a home run to right field to get the Shorebirds on the board. Heading into the third, Peluffo ran into trouble with two on and one out, but Mason McCoy took a Lazaro Alonso ground ball, stepped on second, and fired a strike to first to end the inning unscathed.
The Shorebirds shaved off another run in the fourth. Trevor Craport reached on a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Jean Carrillo came through next with an RBI single, making it 3-2.
In the fifth, Greensboro broke through again after Sam Castro led off the inning with a triple into right field. Thomas Jones followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the Grasshoppers' lead to 4-2.
In the sixth, Ryan Ripken knocked a base hit into center field with two outs. Then, Carrillo ripped a ball into the left center gap for an RBI double, trimming the Greensboro lead to 4-3.
With the Grasshoppers looking to add some insurance runs in the eighth, Baranek and Alonso worked back-to-back one-out walks. Two batters later, Isael Soto delivered an RBI base knock to run the game to its final tally.
Carrillo went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Shorebirds in the loss. Curran, who was named an SAL All-Star earlier in the day, went yard for the 11th time, moving ahead of Zach Jarrett for the team lead.
Alonso finished 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks for the Grasshoppers.
The Shorebirds continue their series against the Grasshoppers on Wednesday night. Cameron Bishop (4-3, 3.50) gets the start for Delmarva against Greensboro's Ryan Lillie (4-1, 2.38). Wednesday is a Silver Slugger Game presented by Peninsula Home Care. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
