Colorado Eagles News Release
Eagles Pick Up Point in 5-4 Shootout Loss to Aces ANCHORAGE, Alaska. -The Colorado Eagles (28-14-0-1) picked up a valuable point in the standings as they rallied from a 4-0 deficit to force a shootout, ultimately falling 5-4 to the Alaska Aces (18-18-3-1) in the second game of a three-game series at Sullivan Arena. The point the Eagles picked up is good enough to set them securely in second place in the Pacific Division standings, just one point behind the Idaho Steelheads.
Aces forward Oliver Archambault stuffed a rebound home, five-hole, from defenseman Dustin Molle to take the early 1-0 lead, 12:19 into the first frame.
Just 1:15 into the second period, Alaska forward Curt Gogol capitalized on a bad Eagles turnover right in front of Eagles goaltender Daniel Spence to pump the Aces' lead to 2-0. The Aces cashed-in on the first power play of the night as forward Ryan Walters netted the puck from the top of the circle to gain the 3-0 advantage over the Eagles. With the Aces third goal of the night on just 17 shots, the Eagles opted for a change in between the pipes and Clarke Saunders stepped in. Alaska forward Bryan Cameron scored the Aces' second power-play goal of the night as he picked up a rebound in front of Saunders to take the 4-0 lead, with less than five minutes to go in the second.
After two scoreless periods for the Eagles, defenseman Brett Kulak avoided the shutout for the Eagles with a 5-on-3 power-play goal from the high slot, 4-1, 8:19 into the third period. Just over one minute later forward Taylor Vause made it a two-goal game with the Eagles second power-play goal of the night, 4-2. After a collision in the crease midway through the third period, Saunders exited with an injury and Spence returned to the contest. The Eagles went 3-for-3 on the power play as defenseman Collin Bowman took a slapshot from the top of the circle to bring Colorado within one goal, 4-3, 14:15 into the third stanza. With Spence pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Kulak tied the game, 4-4, as he netted the Eagles fourth unanswered goal with just 1:08 left in the third, as forward Trent Daavettila sent him a nice chip-pass over the Aces crease.
After a stalemate during the sudden-death, 4-on-4 overtime the Eagles and Aces headed into a shootout. Eagles forwards Trent Daavettila and Chris Knowlton both bested Alaska netminder Johan Gustafsson, but it wasn't enough as Spence couldn't hold off Brendan Connolly, Greg Wolfe or Colten Hayes and the Aces came away with the 5-4 victory.
