INDIANAPOLIS - In the first of four head-to-head meetings between the two teams this season, the Indy Fuel and goaltender Mac Carruth shut out the Elmira Jackals on Saturday at Indiana Farmers Coliseum by a final score of 3-0. With the win, the Fuel improved to 15-22-4-3 overall this season and with 37 points, remain alone in sixth place in the ECHL's North Division standings.
In a fast-paced first period, the Fuel grabbed a 1-0 lead at 2:58 when Indy leading scorer Garett Bembridge scalded a left-circle one-timer past Elmira goaltender Sam Marotta following a clean faceoff win by Fuel center Kyle Stroh. In the middle frame, a physical battle finally gave way to an insurance goal for Indy in the period's final minute when Nick Jones and Vincent Arseneau combined to set up Fuel defenseman Kirill Gotovets who blasted home his sixth marker of the season to make it 2-0 through 40 minutes of play.
Justin Holl potted the lone goal in the third period as one day removed from his 23rd birthday, the Tonka Bay, Minnesota native wedged his fourth of the season through Elmira emergency backup goaltender Justin Sand at 9:42 of the final frame on feeds from Mike Duco and Rhett Bly.
By virtue of a 41-save performance, Carruth collected his second shutout of the season in net for the Fuel and set a new single-game season high for saves and shots faced. With the win, Carruth improved to 8-9-2-2 overall this season and is 7-0-0-0 in his past seven appearances for Indy.
Next up for the Fuel, it's a Friday showdown with Indy's in-state rivals, the Evansville IceMen, with the opening faceoff set for 8:15 pm EST at the Ford Center in Evansville.
