Eagles Hold Off RiverKings for 8th Straight Win
October 31, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) -- Greg Pankiewicz's goal and assist led the Colorado offense to its eighth straight victory Friday night, beating the Mississippi RiverKings 4-2 at the DeSoto Civic Center.
The RiverKings offense countered with goals from Louis Dumont and Dallas Costanzo, but Mississippi lost for the second straight game and is now 2-4-0 for the season.
The game also featured the return of former RiverKings' coach Kevin McClelland to Mississippi. He has directed the Eagles to the best record in the CHL to this point in the season in leading the Central Hockey League's Northwest Division.
There was no scoring in the first period, but Greg Pankiewicz put Colorado on the board with an even-strength goal at 1:24 of the second period.
The RiverKings tied the game at 8:07, as Louis Dumont left the penalty box and immediately took a pass from Stephen Margeson, then beat goaltender Morgan Cey for his third goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.
Konrad Reeder's unassisted goal at 14:39 of the second frame returned the lead to Colorado at 2-1 and Aaron Schneekloth provided the eventual game-winning margin with his second goal of the year at 6:41 of the third period for a 3-1 Colorado advantage.
Dallas Costanzo brought some hope to the Mississippi attack 18 seconds later when he found the net for his second score of the season from Dane Marshall and Dave Simoes, but as goaltender Kevin Beech was pulled for a sixth attacker in the final minute, Riley Nelson deflected a shot from the left side into an open net for his fourth goal of the year and the final score of 4-2 for Colorado.
The RiverKings were out shot for the contest 28-27 and were 0-for-6 on the power play. Colorado scored once in seven power play chances while running their season-opening winning streak to eight straight games.
