Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - On the night that veteran major-leaguer Reggie Abercrombie returned to the Sioux Falls Canaries, rookie Kevin Dultz stole the spotlight.
With the game tied at 5-5 and a runner at third base, Trois-Rivi̮̬res Aigles closer Nick Sarianides walked J.P. Ramirez to face Dultz, who lined an 0-1 pitch off the top of the left field wall to plate Taylor and give the Canaries a 6-5 win on Tuesday night.
It was the first walkoff win of the season for the Canaries (30-39), who improved to 17-10 in the month of July with the series-opening interleague victory.
Trois-Rivi̮̬res (27-40) came back three times on deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2, overtaking the Birds for the first time in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded walk by Jordan Whatcott. But the Canaries responded in the bottom of the ninth when Abercrombie and Pahuta led off with back-to-back infield hits. Pahuta was replaced by Taylor, and both advanced on Jared Clark's sacrifice. Abercrombie scored on a wild pitch while Sarianides (0-3) was intentionally walking Ramirez in order to face Dultz.
Dultz finished 2-for-5 with a double and the game-winning RBI, bolstering his season average to .291. Initially released from Canaries spring training, the rookie catcher has made 37 starts this year and is hitting .333 in July.
The Canaries got a quality start from Kyle Ruwe, who gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Chris Allen (0-1) was a lucky winner after striking out Jon Smith, the only batter he faced, to end the ninth inning with the bases loaded.
Pahuta and Marcos Rodriguez each had run-scoring doubles, and Abercrombie was 1-for-5 in his season debut.
The three-game series against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles continues at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31 at Sioux Falls Stadium. It Ladies Night, plus the first 500 fans in the gates receive a Canaries collector's cup, compliments of Coca-Cola. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
