Sioux City, Iowa - The RailCats salvaged a .500 road trip with a 9-3 victory over Sioux City on Wednesday night. Gary SouthShore improved to 41-30, Sioux City dropped to 27-44 on the year.

The Explorers scored first with back-to-back hits in the second inning. After James Adkins retired the first five batters he faced in the game, Peter Barrows doubled to right-center and Bryan Pounds drove him in with a single to right.

The RailCats offense came right back with a three-run top of the third against Ryan Lucero. After Lucero retired the first two hitters of the inning on four pitches, Drew Martinez singled to center and stole second. Christian Vitters hammered a triple to right center to tie the game at one.

With Vitters on third, Brian Kolb singled him home with a base hit to center and Cristian Guerrero doubled off the wall in right center to give the 'Cats a 3-1 lead.

Guerrero extended the RailCats lead in the fifth with a scorching double into the alley in left center. Christian Vitters came around to score the RailCats fourth run. It was Guerrero's second run-scoring double of the game.

Ryan Lucero was removed after getting Zac Mitchell to ground out in the top of the sixth. Lucero allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk. He struck out one and took his second loss as a professional.

Ryan Brockett drove in Ryan Babineau with a single over a drawn up infield after the pitching change in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.

Sioux City drew closer in the sixth inning. Anthony Kaskkaden led off the inning with a solo home run. Sam Judah followed him with a double and he scored on Austin Gallagher's single to shallow right field.

Later in the sixth with a runner on first, Bryan Pounds hit a ground rule double to right to put a pair of runners in scoring position; that was the last pitch thrown by James Adkins. Kyle Lindquist entered and got Leugim Barroso to tap back to the mound to end the inning.

Adkins allowed three runs on nine hits and no walks in his longest start of the season. James struck out one and earned his first win as a RailCat.

In the eighth the RailCats put the game away taking advantage of some wildness by reliever Josh Poytress. Poytress walked all four men he faced and allowed two runs to score on wild pitches to give the RailCats a 7-3 lead without the benefit of a hit in the inning.

The RailCats added two more in the ninth against reliever Preston Olson with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Babineau and an error on second baseman Anthony Kaskkaden.

With the victory, the RailCats finished the month of July with a record of 15-13 and took the season series from Sioux City 8-6.

The RailCats will have an off day on Thursday and begin a six-game homestand with a three-game set against St. Paul on Friday night.
