Early Deficit Too Much for Wingnuts

EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts (45-25) lost 10-5 to the El Paso Diablos (22-46) at Cohen Stadium on Tuesday night.

El Paso scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and held off a strong charge by the Wingnuts during the middle innings. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs against Wingnuts' starter Ryan Scoles. After Anthony D'Alfonso struck out looking, Juan Apodaca singled home Maikol Gonzalez and Oscar Mesa with the game's first runs. A throwing error moved Jose Garcia to third and sent Apodaca to second. Sergio Burruel followed with a line drive single to center that scored two more to make it 4-0. A Gabrial Suarez single and a walk to Jonathan Cisneros re-loaded the bases. Burruel was forced out at home plate when Devin Thaut grounded into a fielder's choice. Gonzalez capped the inning with a two-out, three-run double to right-center.

The Wingnuts began to chip away in the top of the second. C.J. Ziegler doubled to left-center leading off and took third on a groundball to shortstop from Brent Clevlen. Abel Nieves singled up the middle to bring in Ziegler with the Wingnuts' first run. Madison Beaird singled to left to put runners on first and second. After Johnny Bowden was retired on a deep flyball to right, Jared McDonald ripped a two-run double to right-center that cut El Paso's lead to 7-3.

Bowden led off the top of the fourth with a double to left-center and scored three batters later on a popfly single to left from Jake Kahaulelio.

Clevlen led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to pull the Wingnuts within 7-5.

El Paso re-extended the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. An infield single from Gonzalez led to a pair of throwing errord that scored Suarez. Garcia added a two-run single with the bases loaded later in the frame.

Scoles took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on six hits in five-plus innings. Scoles walked six and struck out three.

Jesse Estrada earned the win for El Paso, allowing five earned runs on nine hits over five innings.

All nine of Wichita's starters reached base at least once, while eight had at least one hit. Rodriguez, Clevlen, Nieves, and Bowden all had multi-hit nights.
