INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Indians right-hander Brandon Duckworth was traded to the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations prior to Sunday afternoon's game.

Duckworth, who was named the club's May Player of the Month, went 7-0 with a 2.52 ERA over eight starts from April 23-May 30. He walked just 15 and allowed a .227 BA while striking out 40 in 53.2 innings during the stretch.

Duckworth led the International League in wins (8) and ranked sixth in ERA (2.42). The Salt Lake City native was also one of seven Tribe hurlers to register an ERA of under 3.20 during the month of May.

"We had an agreement, which occasionally happens, where the player gets a legitimate opportunity for a 25-man roster spot and we work something out for him to go to that spot," Pittsburgh General Manager Dave Littlefield told Pirates.com.

"That's a real good message to send, not only to that player, but to future players who would consider playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates," Pirates Manager Jim Tracy added. "[We're] going to have their best interests in mind. Nobody is looking to hold them back."

Duckworth has accumulated three years and 48 days of Major League service time. He owns a 16-21 career record and 5.34 ERA in 91 appearances between Philadelphia (2001-03) and Houston (2004-05).

The 30-year-old came to terms with the Pirates as a free agent on Jan. 5, 2006. He was a finalist for the final spot in Pittsburgh's starting rotation, spending the majority of Spring Training with the big league club.
