Ducks Rally Past Barnstormers
May 8, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers enjoyed their biggest lead of the season in the fourth inning on Friday evening.
Then, it all fell apart.
Long Island erased a 9-1 Barnstormers advantage and went on to take the opener of a four-game series, 11-10 on a walkoff win at Bethpage Ballpark.
Brian Cavazos-Galvez belted a third inning grand slam as the Barnstormers jumped ahead, 5-1. Later in the inning, newcomer Michael Broad slugged a two-run homer, and Yusuke Kajimoto followed with a solo blast.
Add a run on a passed ball in the fourth, and the Barnstormers appeared on the way to a laugher.
Bryan Evans retired the leadoff batter in the fourth, Cody Puckett, on a pop up to second, then hit Jon Griffin with a pitch. Reegie Corona tripled home one run, and Dillon Haupt reached base when catcher Keith Castillo could not locate a third strike which lay in the batters box. Erik Komatsu continued the surge with a ground rule double to right center. Dan Lyons cut the lead to 9-4 with a single into left, and the Ducks' fifth run scored on a force play.
Long Island reloaded the bases, and Puckett once again lifted a pop up in the neighborhood of Broad at second base. This time, he lost it against the twilight backdrop, and the ball fell in shallow right center for a two-run single.
Kajimoto tripled home a run with no one out in the fifth with what turned out to be the final Barnstormers hit of the night as the Barnstormers stretched the lead to 10-7.
Evans, who started a night before he was originally scheduled with the departure of Chuckie Fick for Taiwan, ran into difficulty again in the fifth. Corona opened the inning with a single to left and took third with one out when Castillo made a bad pickoff throw to first. Komatsu singled him home, and Dan Lyons followed with a base hit to chase Evans from the game.
Pete Andrelczyk took over. The right-hander's second pitch was wild, moving runners to second and third, and one-time Barnstormer Bryan Sabatella tied the game with a two-run single to center.
Andrelczyk and Bryan Morgado (0-1) shut the door on the Ducks until the bottom of the ninth. Puckett started the inning with a scratch single to the third base side of the mound, putting the winning run on first. Griffin took the first pitch he saw deep into the right field corner for a game winning double, capping the rally.
The two clubs play a day-night doubleheader on Saturday. Lancaster will start Bryan Woodall (0-1) in the seven-inning opener and newcomer Marcus Walden in the nightcap. The Ducks counter with right-handers Bruce Kern and Mark Rogers, a member of the Barnstormers in 2014.
There will be no Lancaster broadcast of the day game, but fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15 for the evening portion.
