Skeeters Suffer Tough Setback against Camden, 3-2
May 8, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
CAMDEN, N.J. - The Sugar Land Skeeters' eighth-inning rally came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Camden. Shortstop Beamer Weems was thrown out at the plate after tagging up on a fly ball off the bat of Chris Wallace in the top of the eighth. Sugar Land falls to 8-7 on the season while Camden improves to 8-6. Eight-of-nine starters for the Skeeters picked up hits in the losing effort, including a pair from Delwyn Young.
Shane Loux turned in a stupendous outing, going 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three. The former Big Leaguer exited with a runner on second, but Derrick Loop stranded the potential go-ahead run.
The Skeeters struck first in the top of the third inning, thanks to a pair of doubles against Riversharks starter Fu-Te Ni. Amadeo Zazueta opened the frame with a two-bagger to left field before Young roped a double of his own with one out to score Zazueta and stake Sugar Land to a 1-0 lead.
Camden answered the Skeeters early score with a two-run home run off the bat of Ryan Strieby, pushing the Riversharks ahead, 2-1 in the third.
Sugar Land pushed across the equalizer in the top of the fourth. Kevin Russo picked up a one out double before Todd Jennings singled, allowing Russo to score from second. The single by Jennings snapped a 0-11 streak for the backstop, and the RBI was his first of the 2015 campaign.
After exchanging zeroes over the next three innings, Camden took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jose Gil drew a leadoff walk off James Parr. Gil moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Michael Rockett before a single from Dan Hennigan pushed across the go-ahead run.
The Skeeters threatened in the top of the eighth, but were unable to push across the equalizer. Weems led off the inning with a single before moving up to third on Young's second single of the contest. Chris Wallace lifted a fly ball to right, but the ball was not deep enough to get Weems in to score. The Skeeters' shortstop was thrown out at the plate, trying to score on the sacrifice fly.
