Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-5) scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the 14th inning to defeat the Long Island Ducks (6-7) and sweep the three-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The win in relief went to Sam Gervacio (1-1) pitching an inning and two-thirds of scoreless and hitless baseball, walking none and striking out three.
The 'Fish trailed by five runs after an inning and a half, but scored five unanswered runs to tie the game after seven innings. Bridgeport fell behind in the top half of the tenth inning, 6-5, but tied it once again in the bottom half of the tenth frame on an opposite-field RBI double by Ildemaro Vargas, plating Luis Rodriguez. That was where the game stood until the bottom half of the 14th Inning, when John Alonso scored the winning run from second base on throwing error by Reegie Corona trying to complete the double play on a ground ball hit by Ryan Babineau. The throw got away from Ducks first-baseman Jon Griffin, and Alonso came scampering down from third base to score the unearned run off of losing pitcher Matt Soren (0-1). The 'Fish faithful went home smiling after the longest game of the season for Bridgeport, which lasted four hours and 24 minutes, but it was well worth the wait as the Bluefish win their first extra-inning game of the season and move into a first-place tie with the Somerset Patriots in the Liberty Division. Rodriguez led the way for the 'Fish with four hits.
Bridgeport begins a six-game road trip tomorrow night, May 8th when they take on the Somerset Patriots in the first place battle at TD Bank Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. Bridgeport returns home to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, May 15th when they welcome in the Camden Riversharks for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CLICK HERE for tickets.
