Greenville Drive News Release
Rome, GA - Tied at 2-2 in the eighth the Drive (16-13) capitalized on a pair of Braves (11-17) errors and David Marks singled in the eventual game-winner as Greenville defeated Rome 5-4 in the series finale between the two teams.
With one out and two aboard, a routine grounder by Will Vazquez turned into a defensive mishap in the Drive's favor as a throwing error allowed Yamaico Navarro and Mike Jones to score. David Marks gave Greenville a three-run lead as he followed with an RBI-single.
The Braves gave the Drive a scare in the home half of the eighth as Michael Fisher delivered a two-run double, cutting the deficit to just a run. Ryne Lawson, who tossed held Rome scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, was charged with both runs after recording just one out in the eighth.
Bryce Cox, however, put an end to the comeback, recording the final five outs of the ballgame to seal the victory and earn his second save of the season.
The Drive jumped out to an early lead, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Manny Arambarris doubled home Che-Hsuan Lin and Ryan Kalish. That would be the only runs Greenville would score until the eighth, giving Rome ample time to get back in the game.
Although he was a non-factor in the decision, Eammon Portice pitched effectively over 5.0 innings. The right-hander allowed just three hits, with the Braves scoring single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Mike Jones continue his impressive hitting, finishing the game 2-for-4 to extend his franchise record hit streak to 23-games.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field tomorrow when they begin an eight-game home stand, starting with the Columbus Catfish. Right-hander Terumasa Matsuo will toe the rubber for Greenville as Columbus counters with right-hander Josh Johnson.
Heroes Week highlights the eight games as the Drive will honor various types of heroes during each game. For more information on single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
